Once upon a time, a 19-year-old me was shopping for shampoo in Target with a friend. The two of us were trying to find the Herbal Essences while simultaneously talking about what we wanted to be when we grew up. And that’s when it happened. Right there in front of the Herbal Essences selection, I decided that I wanted to be a librarian.

A few years later, I enrolled into the Library and Information Science department at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign with every intention of becoming a corporate librarian. I took the typical reference and cataloging classes, but I also loaded up on business information, government information, and the dreaded legal information. I then graduated and accepted a position at a public library in Texas…as a children’s librarian.

Dear reader, I had no clue as to what I was doing. The very first time I tried to use a flannelboard, the darn thing fell over and nearly maimed a child (which is how I got my blog title for those of you who are curious). Luckily for me, there were blogs about children’s librarianship, including: Mel’s Desk, Storytime Katie, So Tomorrow, and Abby the Librarian. After a lot of blog reading and trial and error, I got better at this whole children’s librarianship thing. Not only that, but I discovered that I had found my calling.

5+ years later, and I’m still a children’s librarian (currently at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN). I absolutely love my job and can’t see myself doing anything else (at the moment).
